North Queensland has a huge range of things to see and do, and Port Douglas is right in the middle of all the action. Of course the Great Barrier Reef is right on your doorstep with all the snorkelling, diving and cruising you can handle. But there are many other ways to tour the tropical north other than going to the water. The Daintree rainforest is just above Port Douglas and the lush wilderness area has river cruises with crocodile spotting, luxury eco lodges with fantastic day spas and 4 wheel drive tours where you'll witness gorges, ranges, river crossings and an abundance of wildlife.
TravelOnline has over 100 tours in and around the Great Barrier Reef. For more tour information and booking options please visit our site devoted to getting the most out of your Great Barrier Reef holiday.
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system in the world and one of Australia's biggest tourist attractions. There are so many ways to experience the reef. First there is accommodated cruising, where holidays up to a week can be taken on a sailing or motorised boat. Secondly, there is a long list of day trips that leave from The Reef Marina, Port Douglas. Its all about getting out to the reef quickly and getting into the water for some swimming and snorkelling either for a few hours or the whole day. And then there are island day trips too, where Green Island is the favourite, just out from Cairns and surrounded by reef. Lastly there is the option of dive liveaboards where the sole focus is getting as many scuba dives on the reef as you can over a couple of days.
Possibly the biggest attraction on land is the Skyrail Experience to Kuranda. A rainforest cableway carries you deep into the rainforest with spectacular scenery all the way out to the coast. The Kuranda Scenic Railway is very popular too, with iconic images of the tropical north along the way and it makes a great round trip when combined with Skyrail. There are several attractions at Kuranda too and combined with the tourist friendly transportations it makes for a great day out. Transfers are available from Port Douglas to Skyrail.
